"it matters what ideas we use to think other ideas (with)" - Marilyn Strathern, anthropologist
What does this mean to you in light of looking at the history of dance in the world?
What is something that is sticking with you from week 1? What is a question you still have?

I believe this refers to the many aspects of modern day traditions in plays, dances or forms of expressions and/or entertainment typically have inferences from history. I also believe that using ideas from history helps us come up with new ideas/ways to express ourselves.

Something that is sticking with me – is that since the beginning of dawn, humanity has a need/urge to express thoughts and feelings – and we have developed many different ways to do so.
We have developed so many ways to do so- music, dance, poetry, sculpture, painting, story-telling. How we dress, accessorize, wear our hair....
Delete1.I think what this means in the dance calendar is that there is also diversity in dance, that there is more than one movement and. Dance has also developed many different styles and music.
ReplyDelete2.There is no more question for me.

DeleteI think this refers to the aspect of dance now and dance way back when. Comparing just both the different traditions and forms of dance. Marilyn Strathern who this quote came from studies the art of comparison in the sense that she defines analogy as bringing or colliding together.
ReplyDeleteSomething that is still sticking with me after week 1 is the fascinating exploration of an ancient system of beliefs and it's links to the evolution of dance. Do you believe in the dancing goddesses?

ReplyDeleteThe first thought that came to me was that how much we think within our own context. It is human nature to judge other ideas with what we already know and perceive the world. It is a mental exercise to stop and think of why other ideas differ from our own. Doing so helps us better understand others and ourselves.

I kept thinking about how much dance has been affecting us without us even knowing. It is truly all around us. I kept thinking about the uses of dance in politics and how impactful it can be to society. A question I still have is how and why has dance evolved in certain communities over the years.

ReplyDeleteI think it means that when trying to formulate an understanding about dance history our understanding will be affected by how we think, act and function in our culture and traditions which will effect our understanding poorly, we have to remove those culture based ideas and try to understand history in its purest form to form a deep knowledge of dance and its history.
What is something that is sticking with you from week 1? What is a question you still have?
Something that stuck with me is how anything can be considered dance just the simplest forms of movements are considered dance in so many cultures where it did not even have to have music.
My question is what type of movements (dance) did people do to communicate under the rule of tyrants.
We will answer that question a bit with jazz!

I believe it means that it’s important to start by thinking and connecting our ideas through dance to understand other dances and how it relate to them either culture, emotions or ideas.
What is something that is sticking with you from week 1? What is a question you still have?
Something that is sticking with me from week 1 is how all cultures has it’s own different dance but they all express their emotions, culture and celebrations through their dances.

ReplyDelete1. I think this means that in order to be creative and make good work that will last a long time it matters what you think about day to day. to get the the next step or the level you want to be at what every idea someone may have matters.
ReplyDelete2. Don’t have any questions
