Homework Assigned June 1

 Read either: 

An Anthropologist Looks at Ballet (to discuss Thursday June 2) or Politicizing Dance in Victorian England  (to discuss Tuesday June 7) depending on your interest in Classical Ballet or Regency (think Jane Austen) dances. 

The first piece connects Indigenous dances and ballet. The latter article also speaks a lot about poetry and the connection of dance and poetry. It is a feminist piece. 


Questions as you read: How does the author connect dance and politics? Did the "average people" of that society make the same connections? Why or why not?

Taniya- In the article, the author mentions that when the ballroom appears in poetry and prose by women writers, its strict rules of etiquette and gender politics are often questioned and criticized. As a single women, observing dancing couples, the gender politics became clear. So yes I would say "average people" did make the same connection.
