What is sticking with you from the Bharata Natyam guest artist session?
Who are the ancestors of your culture? These may be your literal ancestors, or those you call ancestors. How do they influence your ideas and/or experiences of dance/movement?
My ancestors would be Black Africans who brought their dances to North, Central, and South America, and the Caribbean Islands as they were being brought into slavery. There are different dance styles of hundreds of Black ethnic groups. Dance has always been an integral part of daily life in Africa. it helped enslaved Africans connect with their homeland and keep their cultural traditions alive. They influence my ideas and experiences because everything about African dance is so unique and different. Just by looking at a dance someone is doing you can most likely tell where it came from and no other culture can copy. Because of their influence I also feel the need to create something unique but still within the African style of dancing.
What stuck with me is how the temples are such a big part in their daily lives and how big and spacious those temples were which made them perfect for performing the dances in them.
My ancestors roamed the sea and dived in it to collect pearls this engraved patience and will power in them so deep that they passed it on to their children and their children to their grand children and so on till it reached us, this also effected the way our communities move and act in a way, there is a traditional music and dance in Kuwait that our ancestors created it is called “sea music” which I think is absolutely beautiful. -Jasem
What stuck with me from from the Bharata Natyam guest artist session is the architecture of the huge, well crafted, and designed temples. It’s really interesting to think about how dancers danced in these beautiful temples and how it can be occupied by many worshipers.
My grandfather was a writer. He mostly wrote poems, and he also wrote music to many famous traditional Kuwaiti singers. This made him connect to many musicians and it led him to coordinate dance moves. These moves were hugely influenced by Indian dances. Because of the trades done between Kuwait and India back in the time. This shows how trough trade and travel music and dance can be meshed up between cultures.
The main thing that stuck with me was the deeper dive into bharata natyam. This may seem mundande, but the ankle bells she showed us was the most interesting to me. It looked surprisingly heavy. It made me appreciate the dancers even more and how much they are dedicated to their craft. I also liked the fact the ankle bells showed their flaws, so it is absolutely necessary for them to get it perfect.
My ancestors were traders of the desert. Unlike sea traders that were abdundant at the time, they chose to ride camels and horses across the arabian desert. As it was very harsh, their characters developed into being very knowledgeable and patient. After their long journeys, they usually celebrated their wellbeing into celebrations that had lots of dance and music. Their traditions lived on through generations and we still listen to the same music they used to. Dancing the same dance as they did made me feel connected to them, my land, and ny culture.
My ancestors are Asian. In ancient China, we had our own unique dance style. During the celebration of each dynasty, many people would dance the Chinese court dance at the banquet. Dance not only expresses our love for our country, but also shows the unity of our country to the world. Dance and the culture of our country have mutually influenced each other to develop what it is today. Most of the dances in our country are also influenced by the movements of ancient Chinese court dances, and most of the movements are gentle.
